Open Pores and Skin Texture
Smoother, clearer, more even skin that catches the light instead of the eye. Pores cannot be shrunk, but at our Berkhamsted clinic they can be made considerably less visible, and knowing exactly why yours show is what makes the plan work.

What it is and why it happens
Pore size is genetic and largely fixed. Pores do not open and close with temperature, and nothing shrinks them permanently, which contradicts most of what is written on the subject. What changes is how visible they are, and that genuinely responds to treatment.
Three things make a pore look larger. Congestion, where oil and dead cells fill it and stretch the opening. Loss of collagen around the pore rim, which lets it gape rather than staying taut. And oil production, since oilier skin has larger openings and a shinier surface that catches the light. All three are treatable: congestion clears, collagen rebuilds and oil production can be turned down.
Texture is the related complaint and usually shares the same causes, skin that feels rough or bumpy rather than smooth, most obviously across the cheeks and forehead. At our Berkhamsted clinic both are treated under one roof, including the ClearSkin laser, which is designed to work on oil production at the gland.

How we assess and treat
We look at where the pores are prominent, because the nose and central cheeks behave differently from the jaw. We press gently to see whether the opening is filled or empty. A filled pore is congestion and clears quickly with HydraFacial or a salicylic peel. An empty pore that still looks large is a collagen question and needs a course of SkinPen microneedling. And we ask how oily the skin gets through the day, because where oil is the driver the ClearSkin laser addresses it directly.
Then we set the expectation clearly, because it is a good one. Pore size itself does not change, but visibility improves substantially across a course of four to six sessions, and the texture around the pores smooths with it. Your clinician covers suitability, timing and aftercare at your consultation, and the team is a phone call away afterwards.

Can you treat it at home?
Salicylic acid is the most useful single ingredient, because it is oil-soluble and gets inside the pore where water-soluble acids cannot reach. Retinol improves pore appearance over months by increasing turnover and supporting collagen around the rim, and it is a well-evidenced step you can take at home. Niacinamide reduces oil production modestly and improves how pores look with consistent use. And sunscreen daily, because collagen loss from ultraviolet is a direct cause of pores gaping with age.
What does not work: pore strips, which remove the top of a blackhead, leave the rest and can stretch the opening; scrubbing, which irritates the skin and increases oil; and anything claiming to shrink pores, which is not possible. Cold water and toners do not close pores either, because pores have no muscle. Home care improves the skin around the pore, and the clinic does the clearing, rebuilding and oil control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pore size is genetic and fixed, so no. How visible they are improves substantially with treatment, which is a different thing and the one that matters in the mirror.
No. Pores have no muscle. Cold water, steam and toners do not change their size, though steam does soften what is inside them.
Congestion filling and stretching the opening, collagen loss around the rim letting them gape, and higher oil production. All three are treatable at our Berkhamsted clinic.
SkinPen microneedling for pores that have enlarged with age, HydraFacial and salicylic peels for congestion, and the ClearSkin laser where oil production is the driver. Your clinician works out which is yours.
HydraFacial from £105, peels from £120, ClearSkin from £120 and SkinPen microneedling from £250 at our Berkhamsted clinic.
Four to six for most of these, then maintenance to hold the result.
None for HydraFacial and ClearSkin. Microneedling and peels bring twenty-four to forty-eight hours of pinkness, then skin that looks brighter within the week.
They remove the top of a blackhead and leave the rest, and repeated use can stretch the opening. Vacuum extraction with HydraFacial clears the whole pore without the tugging.
It is the most useful single ingredient, because it is oil-soluble and gets inside the pore where water-soluble acids cannot reach.
Yes, over months, by increasing turnover and building collagen around the pore rim. It is a well-evidenced home treatment, and it supports everything we do in clinic.
Microneedling, HydraFacial and correctly chosen peels suit most skin tones after a skin check, and your clinician chooses the peel with your skin in mind.
Salicylic acid or retinol in your routine, niacinamide for oil, sunscreen every day and no scrubbing. Your clinician covers suitability, timing and aftercare at your consultation, and the team is a phone call away afterwards.
